Album Update for Where It Began

Update on our 3rd album, Where It Began

-Chris is meeting with our sound engineer today. Wil will start mastering the 4th song today!
-I talked to my sister, Maura yesterday. The artwork is coming along nicely & she expects to have some roughs prepared for us by mid-July. She's designing 3 separate roughs & Chris & I will pick one for the album art.
-We will be including lyrics again for this release.
-We're easily on schedule for a Fall release. We'll be starting the pre-order shortly after the artwork is finalized. The pre-paid pre-order will be just like the first two albums. We've yet to determine the price, but it'll be at or around the same price as our last album ($12).
-The album will also be available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc just like the previous albums.
-The website's debut will coincide with the album release. For now, the address will re-direct you to our reverbnation page where you can hear a ton of our songs.

Snapshot/First Light

Hi everyone.....


It feels good to finally post these songs so you can hear them. Chris & I have been a little busy lately & we really took our time to make sure that they sounded as good as possible. They're both pretty & melodic, but not to worry....the songs that we're working on now are loud, quirky & a lot of fun. Thanks again for your support during our mastering fundraiser! 3 songs have been mastered & we have 10 to go.....we're so excited to release the album in the Fall! (Cluthe) Big thanks to John (my father-in-law) for letting me borrow his mandolin! I've been wanting to learn the basics on the mandolin for awhile & this is the first full song that I wrote using the instrument. I kept working on it for about 2 weeks to make sure that it was nice & tight. Once it was where I wanted it to be, I recorded it. It's always a treat when I can get my wife to sing on a song & Laurel's vocals really add another layer to this song.

(Lee) The mandolin is a such a quiet little ‘hurricane’ of sound. Matt’s playing on it is amazing. Great harmonies between he and Laurel on this one. I played drums – which was fun to just have that one part to do. A total Matt composition through and through.

[FIRST LIGHT]

(Lee) Messing around with different tunings and a capo again on this one. The original demo was edgy and had electric guitar on it – but after hearing Matt had a mandolin we decided to keep it as mellow as possible. Matt plays lead on mandolin and sings on this one.

(Cluthe) Chris wrote the music for this one & it immediately grabbed me. It's a loose song that could have gone in a million different directions, but Chris trusted me to try the mandolin on this track.

Chris & I are constantly blown away by the love, support & encouragement that we've received since we started writing & recording music together 3 years ago, and today is no different.

Thanks to your donations & support, we have reached our goal & our 3rd album (still untitled) is now ready to be mastered! Two songs have already been mastered by our sound engineer, Will Reeves and they sound fantastic. We now have the funds to have the 11 remaining songs mastered thanks to you. These songs will be mastered over the next few months while Maura works on the artwork to prepare for a Fall release! (More details on that in the coming months)

Happy Record Store Day from Cluthe/Lee!!

Happy Record Store Day, everyone!!

Chris & I are both vinyl/music nerds, so it only made sense that we'd send you all a fun mp3 on RSD this year. The song we chose is an alternate version of the song "Predicament" that was featured on our first album, Here We Are. We re-recorded this song last year for a b-sides EP called Different Colors that we are still thinking about releasing digitally at some point. This alternate version sounds much different than the original, in my opinion. It features my wife, Laurel on co-lead vocals & I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

The fundraiser for the mastering of our third album is going really well! We're halfway to our goal & we'd like to thank you all for your support!! Enjoy the song & we'll see you soon!

Cluthe/Lee Announcement!

Dearest friends & family,

As you might have heard, Matt and I are preparing to put together songs for our third record since starting the band in 2009. For this record we are taking on the challenge of having the album “mastered” by a local sound engineer here in Columbia, MO. Mastering is a step in the recording process where the sound of the instruments are balanced, equalized, and enhanced so that the finished product will be both more musical and stand up next to professional CDs nicely. We recently paid to have one song of ours mastered and the results were flooring! Matt and I both feel that mastering this album will make it sound light years better than anything we’ve done to date.

The process of mastering and releasing an album is no easy feat. The costs can be upwards of several hundreds to thousands of dollars. This poses a problem for Matt & I since we are independent, unsigned, self-sustaining artists who don’t tour or sell merchandise. In plain terms, we don’t make money being in this band together. In the past we’ve put up money of our own just to get our last two records released. Unfortunately for Matt & I, the money isn’t there for mastering. Our fundraising goal is $600 & every cent helps!

[THE GHOST]

(Cluthe) This song was a blast. I'd written this song back in 2004 or 2005 & it sounded completely different. It was fingerpicked with a slide lead and the vocals were low and muted. I was going through some old lyric books one day and found it. I remembered how I'd played it originally, but I felt like playing a heavier song that day. So, I used the same chords & played around with the chorus a bit until the main riff stuck out. That was it. Chris is right...I have been taking my time with my songwriting lately & I can see & hear the changes in my approach in this song. Instead of just getting an idea & recording a "final" version, I'm taking my time with it to really sort it out so it makes more sense to me. It has helped me to improve my timing and vocal cadence as well. (At least I think so!) This song took me quite some time to mix. Life has been a little busy, but I'm also trying to get the best sound possible. I know that he worked really hard on the drums...and it shows. This song is one of my favorites that we've done to date & I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed writing and recording it.

(Lee) In early February, Matt sent me an instrumental he was working on which would end up being The Ghost. I was drawn to it's big sweeping chorus - which at that point had no vocals on it yet. Matt told me he was adopting a new approach to song writing - and really spending a lot of time developing his ideas out fully. By mid-February I had a complete working track complete with guitars, bass and vocals. Working on drums for this song was both exciting and an exercise in patience. I mirrored Matt's new song writing and did my best to play the song and kit a lot before committing any takes to tape. I probably played for a day or two before I started recording takes. Matt got mp3's along the way and was very encouraging. I think all said and done I count over 20 different takes to tape. The last 10 started really sounding similar - and that's when I had found my place in the song. For the first time in any songs we've done - I ended up patching together some parts of the best takes into a "Frankenstein" type of track. The drums you hear on this song are that track; a blend of takes #9 and #11. I know I've said this before - but I really only follow my instincts and ears when I play the drums - I feel The Ghost represents some of the best drumming I've done to date. I love the lyrics and vocals on this song - some of the most moving and easily one of the best chorus's I've heard in our songs.

[GIVE YOURSELF AWAY]
(Lee) I recorded a cover back in November 2011 and didn't really like the way it turned out. I did however - really like how I set up the drum kit for the song though and sent Matt an MP3 of the drum track sometime in January 2012. He came back just a few days later with some guitar and the makings of what would become Give Yourself Away. It's a pretty dark sounding song that spent quite a bit of time in the mixing process. I ended up changing the drum sound towards the end - but the intense "freak out" at the end of the song really forced me to keep the drums in their very original state. This is rare when I'm mixing - I do tend to tinker a lot with instrument sound and go back and forth on effects, compression, placement, etc,. Its been amazing to me how our 'sound' has grown since starting with little knowledge on the process of sound capture and mixing. When I go back and listen to some of the very early stuff we did together and then listen to this song - I'm blown away at how much more polished we sound. I can say that about us right?! Haha! Hope you all like this one! 

(Cluthe) This was an interesting song to write. Chris had the drum track down & sent it to me. All he said was "have fun & see what happens." There are 2 other songs (much heavier, I might add) that I wrote using his drum track prior to settling on Give Yourself Away. This song was a demo that I had written and I never really thought it would see the light of day. When the other ideas didn't quite fit, I started strumming the chords to Give Yourself Away. I had to completely change my approach for the rhythm guitar to make the chords fit and flow, but it worked. The chorus is also completely different from the original demo version. I love the drum track & it really shows just how far that Chris has come behind the kit.

Crooked Building/In My Time + News...

hey everyone.... matt here. just wanted to give you all an update on several things that we have going on. we've mentioned a few of these things here & there and i thought it would be good to condense the info and put it all on one place.

 (Lee) Written back on October 27 2011 on a very rainy, cold mid-fall day after ingesting a few hours of Neil Young and Crazy Horse records. Totally inspired by their Ragged Glory record. I had some crazy ideas for this song when I first wrote it - none of which would have been good now listening to what Matt did here! Matt's leads on here are fantastic! His timing in the bridge especially! 

(Cluthe) Easily one of my favorite songs we've worked on in the last several months. It was shelved for a little bit because we had so many other songs brewing & because of the holidays. Chris told me that he had some ideas, but sent me the basic track & asked me to explore. So, I did! 

"IN MY TIME"

-words/music: Cluthe

 (Cluthe) I had the flu for about 1-2 weeks & couldn't really talk without having a crazy coughing fit, so it gave me a lot of time to work on my songwriting with only the guitar. Once I started getting my voice back, I recorded this song in one take. I thought it was going to be a demo, but Chris liked the tone of it, so we kept it. And I'm glad that we did! 

(Lee) If memory serves, Matt recorded this when he had a cold? Or was just getting over one? Great acoustic driven number. Percussion and added guitar needed to be woven gently into the song. I initially added all this crazy delay/reverb drenched leads into the song to try playing off Matt's great lead licks - but in the end took a very minimal approach (which I love).

first of all, i just wanted to mention that we're working hard on the next batch of songs! we have a few that are in various stages of mixing/recording right now. on top of that, we're each trying out several other new ideas. i've changed my songwriting approach a bit & have decided to really take my time with my writing so i can (try to) get the best out of each and every song. the new songs are really shaping up nicely....here's a quick list of the ones that we're working on now.

 we're really excited about our third album (still untitled at the moment). we're trying a different approach & have enlisted the help of a sound engineer (Wil) to master the album. this is a long process, but we have plenty of time before our tentative release timeframe of late summer/early fall. the mastering work has already begun & Chris will be there to listen in as it moves forward. the first song that we had mastered was "It Spins" and it sounds absolutely HUGE to our ears. Wil is doing a great job & we can't wait to share all of these tracks once the album is released! 

we're getting close to finalizing a tracklisting as well! we're really excited to have maura back on board designing all of the original artwork for the album. our new website is being built by maura's husband, jake. he also happens to be my brother in law & it's really cool to have them both involved! we have plans to launch the new site so it coincides with the release of the 3rd album. stay tuned! 

[wishlist Austin pre-party] 

as you know, Chris & I played the PJ20 Wishlist pre-party last september & it was a blast! i was asked to play the Austin Wishlist pre-party last week by the organizers & i can't wait! the set(s) will consist of all original songs with some PJ covers thrown in here and there. the party is on April 27, 2012 at The Local Pub & Patio in Austin. It starts at 2pm and I should have set times soon. It's open to the public, so if you're in Austin...please stop by!

Unfolding/Red Clouds

Matt: This song has been in my head since I wrote it late last year & I'm very happy to finally release it! Ha! My wife & I were in the middle of packing and moving and I remember feeling a tad overwhelmed. I had this little idea circling in my head one day, so I stopped packing & picked up the acoustic to write this song. I ran through it once or twice, then switched to my Strat & hit record. To me, it sounds very rough around the edges...which I love. I was unsure of my solo at first, but Chris insisted that we keep it. This song has gone through a few mixes & revisions, but the core of the song has remained. I'm really proud of this song & love to play while sitting around the house.

Chris: Another one sent back in November 2011 that got put on the back burner for all of December during the break. Throughout work on this song Matt would tell me that this one was pretty special to him. Before I started working on it he'd said that it was an "album #3 contender." Real moody song - the vibe dial is turned to 11 on it for sure! Like Red Clouds, drums for this were very difficult for some reason. In past blogs I've said how difficult it is keeping time first as a novice drummer, and second when we're not recording these songs in the same room! I think there were something like 5-6 takes that all sounded horrible - before I took the Meg White approach on the kit and tried using the simplest drum cadence I could do - no fills - not a whole lot of cymbal work. I remember the kick drum was giving me fits. I ended up taking out the blanket & grabbing some newspaper and stuffing the bass drum with it (John Bonham technique for all you R&R buffs). I think I finally got the punchy sound I was looking for. For my guitar parts - I ended up recording two - I was trying to match the moody/vibe of the song. Jumping in on parts and jumping out took some time. Matt did a great job editing what I sent him - which was pretty constant playing throughout the song.

[RED CLOUDS]

Chris: First of a few songs that we started working on after nearly a month off from music. I think Matt recorded this song back in November 2011? So many songs - one loses track of when things are done! Red Clouds is a nice little acoustic ditty with this slamming break down that took me by surprise when I first heard it. The solo he played was equally surprising - Matt has really come into his own with guitar solo's in the last year or so. Drums were tricky on this because it was acoustic. Lots of takes on this one - lots of back and forth to the mixer trying to find the right tone/sound for this song. I ended up using one wood stick and one brush - a strange combo but I wanted to make sure I didn't overwhelm the song with the drums. Not an easy thing to do when I usually have no clue what I'm doing behind the kit! Hahaa!! The guitar parts I added came pretty quickly - I wanted something really contrasting to the quiet/acoustic tones of the song. This one didn't take too long for Matt to mix this once my parts were finished. Great song - could see us playing this live for sure.

Matt: I'd been fiddling around with the main riff/chord progression for awhile, but was never sure what to do with the bridge. I decided to do a rough recording to see what Chris thought. Well, the rough recording stuck! I love his drumming on this song & it's amazing to hear how much his drumming has evolved since he set up his kit. The solo truly came out of nowhere...and again, I was surprised that Chris wanted to keep it in the final mix. It's a fun tune that was also written while we were gearing up for our move & the move even crept into these lyrics: "Life more fragile than a box..don't you know?"

"Timeline" Show Info

hi everyone...

when i landed this gig at Dunn Bros, i had a crazy idea to try something different for this show....something that i'd never tried before. as the weeks went on, it felt less & less crazy. so, here i am ready to play songs that i haven't played in 10+ years. first, a little history.

i love music. i always have & i know that i always will. i have memories of sitting in front of my sister's mirror when i was a little kid strumming my mom's acoustic guitar. of, course, i wasn't playing....merely making noise & driving my family crazy. i would put a cd or tape (yup, i'm showing my age) and act like i was in the band. i think i was 7 or 8 years old at the time.

growing up in our house, there was music everywhere. my dad would shake the walls listening to classical music records, my sisters would listen to 80's pop, rock and country & my brother was listening to a little bit of everything. so, it's been with me my whole life.

in high school, i met a guy in art class & we started a band. i sang lead vocals & played drums. my bandmates were much better than i was. it's a tough thing to sing in a band when you're 14 or 15. my voice would change mid-song. ha! in any case, we played a handful of shows and had a lot of fun. at this point, i was writing teenage lyrics...but couldn't write the songs i was hearing in my head b/c i couldn't play guitar or piano.

when i went to college, i met a guy in my english comp class. we got to talking about music & i found out that he was in a band. he told me that their drummer had an injured wrist & asked if i could fill in for one show & a few practices. i agreed...as long as he taught me guitar. the first lesson, he showed me the 8-10 basic chords & told me to keep practicing. that was all the encouragement i needed.

once i had the chords down, i started writing simple songs (still some of my favorite to write). after a year or so of practicing, i played my first solo acoustic show as the "opener" for a night of karaoke at a local bar.

this timeline show has allowed to me look back & re-learn some of those old songs & i've had a lot of fun practicing over the last few weeks. it's been interesting to go through dozens of old notebooks...reading the old lyrics. it's hard to believe that i wrote them.

for this show, i will be playing a variety of songs. some from when i started writing/playing, some from my days of singing lead & playing rhythm guitar in End Result, some newer solo songs, and it will conclude with songs that i've worked on & recorded with my bandmate in Cluthe/Lee, Chris Lee. i've also thrown in a couple of covers here & there that were written by some of my favorite songwriters. my wife will be joining me on stage for a couple of songs & it should be a lot of fun.

i'd like to thank everyone that's ever told me to keep at it. it's a trip to look back....but this show has me even more excited about looking forward. see you at the show!

She/Fragile Ones

---SHE---
(Matt) This is a song that pre-dates my work with End Result & was written shortly after my oldest sister got engaged & a couple of years before I met my wife. I am the youngest of four children & at the time I was the only one that wasn't engaged/married or in a serious relationship at all. I was thinking about my sister's engagement and was trying to imagine what that felt like...to know that you want to spend your life with someone, in good times & in bad. I had been in somewhat serious relationships before, but nothing that would have led to marriage. With this in mind, I wrote this song & started playing it at some acoustic shows. When I started working with End Result, I kept it to myself for awhile because it didn't seem to "fit" our sound. I played it for the band one day at rehearsal. We had a show that weekend & had just run through the setlist during practice & started jamming. I asked if they'd like to hear it & they said yes. We played it live that weekend...and proceeded to play it at every show after that. I didn't fully understand what this song meant until I met my wife, but now I do.

I randomly asked Chris if we could play it at our show in February of last year & he was game. I love his guitar work on this song! Then, I sent him the rough recording out of the blue & this is a result of that rough recording. I'd like to dedicate this song to my amazing wife, Laurel.

(Chris) She is a song I remember Matt sending me a demo of in 2009 back when he was with End Result. It was an easy song to get hooked on. A straight up love song. It wasn’t until 2011 when we played our first show in Dallas that I’d heard it again & he had proposed adding it to the set list. We ended up playing it again at our second show in Delevan in late summer 2011 – and I think Matt had plans to do a proper recording of the song shortly after that trip. It’s truly a great song – and one I believe would be a big break for him/us if we were doing music as full time careers.



---FRAGILE ONES---
(Chris) I wrote the music for Fragile Ones back in November 2011 after a very intense dream about my Grandfather. In the dream he was singing me this lullaby as a little kid and when I woke I immediately began searching the guitar for the chords/notes. The music he was singing was loud as reality and when I found the chords I got a bit overwhelmed. I ended up calling my parents and telling them about this dream. They said when I was very little he used to sing songs to me. Totally blown away. A memory that I have no memory of – coming up in my dreams. There’s a somber tone to it – and a gentle sway that to me is very lullaby-like. I don’t often write such directly personal/inspired things like this – but it happened, so here you go!

(Matt) This song is one of the simplest songs (and most beautiful, in my opinion) that Chris has ever sent me. He was very clear from the beginning....let's keep it simple, so just add vocals. When I heard what he'd recorded, I agreed immediately. While Chris was thinking about his Grandfather when he wrote the music, I was thinking about our nephew. He's a tough little guy that was dealing with some medical issues (he's doing much better now) and my brother and sister in law were handling it like champs. The idea is that whether we're big or small, we're all fragile...and so is life.

Wherever you are - Happy New Year from Cluthe/Lee!

Where to start all ye faithful? Hmmmm... After a much needed break in December, the Cluthe/Lee engine is starting to turn over once more. 2011 was quite a year for Cluthe/Lee. Our second album - two shows and of course lots and lots of new songs. We are both thankful for all events that have come our way since 2009 and we're looking forward to continuing this collaboration into 2012 with you all!

As I type this up there are some exciting things to look forward to in the coming months. First is Matt's solo show at Dunn Brothers in Addison, Texas this month. We had originally planned it to be a Cluthe/Lee show - but forces beyond my control made it impossible for me to be there. I can assure you that an evening of Matt playing his extensive song catalog, covers, and who knows what - should not be missed! Matt is tinkering around with some very interesting/fun ideas for his show. I won't spill the beans in this blog - I'm certain he'll be in touch with show details.

We are also in the process of gathering up songs for our third LP - process is showing good strength so far. We're excited to be moving on and getting out this next batch of tunes to you all. I can tell you that it's the most aggressive/experimental set of songs to date - and I know you all will be happy with it! It's also the very first truly organic LP we will have put out to date. Meaning it's all live instrumentation - no drum loops. I've been hard at work getting into the art of drumming - and learning how to drum with music written 1000 miles away at that! It's not an easy feat you guys - but lots of fun!!

There are a number of new instrumentals I've completed in December and there up to listen to at www.reverbnation.com/presentlyfalling if you want to hear. There are a number of songs Matt has been working on as well that are going to be worked up in the next month or so. Matt and I continue to evolve as song writers and we're both very happy with where the band is at here in 2012. There were several projects we spoke of in 2011 that are still very much alive - just trying to figure out how to move forward with them. One of those is our EP "Different Colors" which is all but finished - minus artwork. We hope to have that out digitally when the time comes. You'll find some very neat alternate takes on songs you know from both our LPs - plus a few surprises. "Don't Be A Number"

Hi everyone!

Matt and I have put wraps on a song I wrote in October called "Don't Be A Number." This song was written without much forethought on my part; rare, as I usually am plotting and planning! I broke a string on my acoustic prior to recording the final track, so this recording is void of my high E string! I'm sure there are other strange instances like that which happened in the past. I'll have to see if I can remember more of them. I know there have been a few drum takes on songs where my foot has itched really bad, and as a result missed a beat but liked the drum take so much it had to stay! Ok, I'm straying off topic here. Focus, focus!

Per usual, Matt and I have something like 8-9 different songs in various stages of completion. I finished up a productive song writing period in October/November, and right now we're just taking things slowly. Giving the ideas full attention/exploration. Days go by listening to them and seeking direction. The songs we've done in the last 6 months have all been about as heavy on the rock n' roll as we've been in a long time. This new batch of 8-9 are all intense, guitar driven songs for sure. Some soft and delicate ones in there too, so all you softies out won't be disappointed either! Haha!!

Let's see, what else? Oh, we're starting to track songs for our third LP! So far Matt and I agree on 12 out of 15 possible songs in play at the moment. This is a good sign. There are a few new ones (and one really old forgotten song) that are making a push for the track list. We'll see how it all sorts out! Yesterday I re-recorded some drums for a few of the songs on that list. I think I've become a bit more comfy on the kit since some of these were completed in 2010. It's fun to re-explore a song that captured a point of progression. Bringing a bit more experience and confidence to the table. Ok, hmm, what else...Matt has a show booked for Cluthe/Lee at Dunn Bros in Addison, TX on Saturday January 28th at 7pm. That's outside Dallas for all you non-Texans! We're excited to be able to play live again, and *knock on wood* that the MetroPlex does not have another ice storm like last year!

We've posted some live footage from our Wishlist Foundation/PJ20 gig over on YouTube. If you search my YouTube name "gibytoof" you will find those "Live at Hemingways" videos as well as a bunch from our show at Dunn Bros in February earlier this year. We have some decent pro-video from our Wishlist gig and in the coming months I'll be compiling it into something to watch. Not sure how it will all turn out, but stay tuned! One Day/Crying Shame

Matt here....thought we'd mix up the blog a little bit by having only one of us post about each song. Hope you enjoy them...we definitely had a lot of fun writing, recording & mixing them.

-ONE DAY-
(Chris) One Day is a song that I wrote up after taking our dog for a walk one evening. It’s funny how music comes creeping into my head and in this case I had the main chords nailed down by the time I got home. Matt and I were talking about this song a few days ago and he said he wrote something like it a long time ago and that it was basically the same chord structure! Crazy! The lyrics Matt added are intense. To me it seems like he is singing out about making the most of your life. The lines “you only have one breath, one smile..” have spoken to me as of late.

-CRYING SHAME-
(Matt) This song came together very quickly. It's a basic chord progression that I just started picking through & a vocal melody quickly formed. The message of this song is to stay true to yourself & change your life if you see it heading down a dark path. It's good to learn from the past, but you must be aware of how your present actions can affect your future. Chris' parts are hauntingly beautiful & very subtle. I don't think I've ever heard him play this way before.

Phone Call

hey everyone...

just wanted to write a quick blog about this new song called "Phone Call." this is a song that i wrote back in July of this year & we kept pushing it back for one reason or another. in the last few weeks, Chris & I have had the chance to go through a bunch of songs (old & new) to decide which ones we should work on next. i suggested that we finish this song again & he took several listens. he definitely surprised me when he said that he didn't want to add anything to it...because it already sounded like it was done. so, here it is. it's a moody acoustic song that hold a lot of meaning to me. i'm not going to get into the specifics concerning what it's about, but i will say that there are times in life when a simple phone call can floor you and shake you to your core. thanks to Chris for pushing me to release this. i'd also like to thank him for our friendship & collaboration because it has allowed me to write songs that are very personal....songs that i used to shy away from.

New song "Dear Woman" has been posted!

Hi all

Real quick here, Matt and I just posted a song we wrote on Monday this week called "Dear Woman." It's a big blusey improv that was done as on the spot as two guys living 1k miles apart can be. Here are a few thoughts from Matt.

"this is an improv in every sense of the word. i was recording a lead guitar track for another song & when that was done, i found myself playing these chords with a stop/start rhythm & really liked the way it sounded. so, i decided to record it. while setting up for the recording, i thought it would be fun to try some live improv vocals right then & then while playing the guitar track. no edits, no polish...just a fuzzbox type effect running on both the guitar & vocals. and this is that track...very raw & rough and a very good indication of what we sound like live. i think everything was done in one take for both of us and Chris absolutely nailed his parts down within an hour or 2. who says you can't capture the live sound from 3 states away?"

hi everyone...
Matt here posting the first of several new Cluthe/Lee songs that we're working on right now. prior to our show in Wisconsin, we'd been spending most of our time mixing our last two songs & rehearsing for the show. so, we took a break from working on new material. since we've been back, we've both been writing like crazy & this is the first of several new songs that we'll be releasing. this is a tune called "Birds" & it was written the week after our PJ20 trip/adventure. i'm a big fan of lyrical imagery and i think you'll be able to sense that after reading the lyrics below. i kicked this idea around for a few days, then went into my music room/studio & set up the mic. all of my parts were written & recorded in an hour's time...which is not like me at all! Chris' drumming fits the song perfectly & his lead really elevates the song & comes in at the perfect time. speaking of his lead, this is what he had to say about it....

"Funny story about when I recorded the solo. My headphones and guitar cable are long enough that I can wander into the next room and play if I want. I probably played like 5 different leads in places all over "Birds." On the final take I started walking around the room about mid point in the song and decided to stroll out of the room away from the computer. As I got to the door, I suddenly heard where I wanted to jump in and play. That one note you hear squeal is me raising the head stock on the guitar trying to not bump the door frame! I played the rest of the solo in the hallway outside the studio. For about the next hour I kept trying to get that squeal by raising up the guitar to no avail!"

Reflection

Hey friends

I'm drawing on some memories that are now nearly a month old, so bare with me here. I've got the recently released Nirvana Live at The Paramount 10/31/91 blaring in my ears as I type. Kind of hard to focus! Hahaa!! Wow, I was 13 years old on that date and my sister had just bought "Nevermind" on tape. My Mom didn't really like it....at first anyway!

Ok, so all of August is this blur of 1-2 hours of daily practice getting ready for the set Matt and I were scheduled to play Labor Day weekend just ahead of the PJ20 shows at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. Our first "major" gig together. I remember thinking how difficult it was practicing without Matt around and having only a CD to play along to. I tried learning both my parts and his parts so I could jump into songs different ways. It wasn't until I flew down to Waco last weekend in August that I really felt the butterflies go away. The connection to the songs were intense in practice.

That week leading up to the show was all relaxed and easy. I was more excited for the PJ shows and of course getting a chance to actually hang out with Matt and his wife Laurel in person! It's tough having a "virtual" friend most days! Hahahaha! So, they made it up here that Thursday and we were off! The preparation just seemed to be there and nothing else. We jammed out on some tunes all 8 hours up, stopped for a slammin' breakfast/dinner before landing at a lovely little town called Delavan. It wasn't minutes we were there and I saw PJ people around. The first guy I met asked me if I "knew Dimi." (you're such a rock start Dimi!)

Thank goodness we arrived early cos' we got to sleep in the Friday of our show and totally relax. We took in the sights, had some tapi 'OH' ca (that's a Wisconsin accent you see) and got to see a record player Matt and I were sure came from Abraham Lincoln's bedroom. It was that old! The ladies ended up finding some ancient underwear in the same antique shop (they didn't buy it) and we got Maura postcards from the 1940s. I recall Matt asking several times if I was ready for the show. I don't think either of us ate much lunch that afternoon.

Back to the hotel to change and do a quick rehearsal of ones we still weren't quite sure of. Off to the venue. It was out of the middle of nowhere! A giant Jimmy Buffet themed bar. We pulled up and were given VIP parking (haha) to unload our gear. I think it all kinda hit me when security said "the band has arrived." Wow. No sense for what that even meant. Still don't! **OK, NIRVANA OFF, BEER OPEN AND MUSIC CHANGED**
The place was pretty empty. There were a TON of security guys there though. Turns out the sound guy wasn't there yet and so we just sat around and shot the breeze. Not without some weirdness though. A couple of guys sat and pretty much gave Matt and I the stink-eye from the time we arrived till some time after we started our first set. Who knows what the heck that was all about. We had bigger issues, like the fact the sound guy still wasn't there and people were starting to trickle in. The party seemed to be a tad disorganized with people running late, and a general uncertainty as to what was to happen when. Eventually the sound guy did show up and we got things rolling pretty easy after that.

The first set was pretty calm and paced. I remember the monitors being really sharp and clear on stage, and being excited about that. It was one of those electric moments I won't forget. A real smack in the face like "this is it, this is what we sound like in the same room!" I don't think there were many people floating around during the first set, but it did get a bit busier as we went. Ali and Laurel were seated close enough to see them, which was comforting. I remember the song "Circle" in particular because there was a part where Matt and I started a little improv jam right in the middle of the song. We locked in a few times and traded riffs which was awesome and completely spur of the moment. Seemed like we were egging each other on musically. So, the first set drew to a close and some cheers from a much bigger crowd than when we started.

Nearly 3 hours later after a blur of chaos and disorganization we jumped on stage to find the room completely booked. Later I find out there were 1500 people in and around the venue. Pretty freaking scary to be honest. We jumped into the second set and after the first song Matt leaned over and said we needed to keep the energy up. The next hour was a huge blur of songs. I honestly can't remember many of them. He was calling out songs out of order from the set list and I do remember a moment of panic trying to tune for "Recollection." I am really glad we pulled that one off. It's the one I wanted to most play off the set. Poor Matt's voice had been sitting so long in between sets it started to go on him close to the end. By the last song "Silver Lining" he was just shot. I felt so freakin' bad for him. I remember trying to sing the harmony parts and his voice was barely there! Other random memories from the set; a few different guys jumped on stage and asked us if we'd play Pearl Jam and one guy asked for a "sing along" at the end; two people had us sign copies of our CDs in between songs; seeing someone in the crowd singing the words to "Silver Lining."

A huge sense of relief after the sets. We relaxed, had a few drinks and headed out. The festival the next 2 days were the most fun I think I've ever had! I met some really nice people and of course got to see the best band in the world play two nights. Spending time with Matt and Laurel was so easy. It was like hanging with people we'd known for years. Thanks to them both for making that experience an absolute blast!

It's been really busy for me since that weekend. Matt's been hard at work on new music though and I will be jumping back into the band come early October. The new tunes are sounding really great and I can't wait to get back to creating again!

PJ20 Experience (part one)

wow...what a trip.

it's been well over a week since Laurel & I left the insanely hot weather of Waco to head north to Columbia, MO to meet up with Chris & Ali. to be honest, it's taken me that long to collect my thoughts from one of the best musical weekends of my life.

we started our journey late in the day last Wednesday (8/31) with our goal being to make it all the way to Springfield, MO to stay the night. well, we had some bumps along the way (traffic, lovely Oklahoma construction, etc..) but managed to make it to Vinita, Oklahoma shortly before midnight. after waking up & grabbing some breakfast, we were on our way. we've driven through OK many times, but had never gone this far east through Muskogee/Tulsa, so the change of scenery was nice. there were mini-casinos at every gas station..not something we're used to seeing in TX. eventually, we found our way to Joplin, then Springfield, then drove through the Ozarks (cool little Ozark town: Osage Beach) and finally arrived in Columbia right around 1 in the afternoon. we were greeted by our awesome friends...people we've only known for about 2 1/2 years, but it feels like we've known them our whole lives. we quickly unpacked the Scion & started playing luggage & gear "tetris" in their car. somehow, it all fit! (i was shocked, to be honest)

and away we went....off to St. Charles, MO to drop off their dog, Gertie. from there, we kept heading north towards our final destination of Delavan, Wisconsin. the drive was great...tons of new scenery...lots of cows...and SO GREEN. Laurel & I hadn't seen green grass in months because of the drought in TX & it was a very welcome sight. we arrived in Delavan exhausted & excited. the months of rehearsing, planning & preparation were about to become a reality, and we were ready.

day #1 is Wisconsin started off by sleeping in & enjoying some coffee/breakfast in a quiet hotel lobby. our friends from all over the country & world would start arriving soon...and we couldn't wait to play. after stocking up on some groceries & supplies for the weekend, we were able to meet a lot of these friends as they arrived. these are people that have been supporting what Chris & I have been doing from day one...and it was amazing to finally meet them in person.

the four of us ventured into the quaint downtown of Delavan for some lunch & some vinyl shopping, of course! after that, it was almost time for soundcheck, so we went back to the hotel, packed up & off we went. we arrived @ Hemingway's right around 3:30pm...the show was set to start at 6 & we were told to be there 2 hours early for soundcheck. it seems like there there was some miscommunication going on because the soundguy didn't show up until 5:30 or so...30 minutes before we were supposed to start our 1st set. we had the fastest soundcheck that i've ever been a part of...then we were ready to go. Jen & Laura introduced us & spoke about the Wishlist Foundation & their goals for the evening. (goal: $10,000; actual: $13,000!!!)



it was showtime. this was it. we'd been practicing like madmen for months and here we were.


set #1 went exactly as planned & we had so much fun....it was all a blur, to be honest. we were supposed to start our 2nd set right around 8pm, but the raffle was running long & there were other events planned, so we enjoyed the atmosphere & waited. when it was time to start our 2nd set, we were more than ready and launched right into "Man Of The Mountain." i could tell that the break had played havoc with my voice, so we decided to keep the momentum going with more of the faster & upbeat songs while i could still sing them! the place was PACKED at this point and we had a blast! Chris sounded absolutely AMAZING & we had some really fun jams going on...smiling the whole time. i'm a lucky guy to be writing music with him...but even more lucky to be his friend.



before we knew it, it was over. we just smiled, said thanks & tried to enjoy what was happening. we'll have soundboard audio & pro-shot video of the show soon & we can't wait to share it with you all.

i know i said it earlier in this post, but it was truly an honor meeting so many people & being a small part of a truly wonderful event. it's something that we'll never forget.

so, there's part one of my PJ20 thoughts...part two will be about the festival (which was beyond mind-blowing, by the way). i'm sure i could have said a lot more...but i still haven't completely come down yet. thank you again to our friends (both old & new) & family for your constant love, support & encouragement....especially our amazing wives, Laurel & Alison. this wouldn't have happened if it weren't for you all.

Fault Line:
(Matt) I remember Chris being really excited when he sent this to me--after hearing it, I knew why. Everything was done & it sounded amazing. It's definitely one of the "harder rock" songs we've ever recorded & I had a lot of fun recording the vocals. All-around awesome playing (he plays every instrument on this one!) by Chris.
(Chris) A product of patience on my part. I was struggling with some things, mostly trying to do too much when coming up with riffs/song structures. One afternoon I got a bit angry at the whole mess and started really raking the strings and bending a bit too aggressively. After I was done I set the guitar down for a bit. When I came back I started playing a few riffs and the guitar had some odd tuning as a result of earlier. This song came out of that. Everything on this is a first take. One of the steadiest drum beats I’ve done to date, I think. I called the song Optimus Prime when I sent it to Matt. He was on board quickly and had vocals down not a day after I sent it to him. One of the heavier songs we’ve done together.

Chaos Ensues:
(Matt) This was a strange song. I'd been playing around with a simple chord progression & decided to try to add the vocal melody that I'd been hearing in my head on top of it. The first 2/3 of the song were pretty much done when I hit the record button...then something happened when i sang the line "before the chaos ensues.." basically, a switch turned on & this song took a strange turn. While listening to the playback, I had the idea of adding some vocal loops on top of the existing track, but I never knew just how far this song would go. Chris was very encouraging & even suggested that I add more vocal loops at the end of the song. The best way I can describe this song is that it could fall apart at any second...but it somehow stays together.
(Chris) I'd never heard a vocal loop like that in songs we've done, so obviously I felt it needed to be the prop for the song. Matt said it was the MOST difficult song to mix/master that we've ever done due to the sheer number of tracks.

Monday means new songs

Hey everybody!

Happy Monday! Matt and I are happy to be sharing the two newest songs we've finished this month! Both very different as per our usual style. I can't recall which came first to be honest. Music tends to be flying everywhere all the time it seems. Hopefully you've had a chance to pre-order our second record "Life Can Go." A great song Matt wrote last month I think? There was a flurry of songs he was sending and I latched onto this one pretty quickly. Love the rhythm guitar playing he does. I had this idea of percussion sounding like a beating heart. Thought it fit the lyrics pretty well. The guitar parts were all played so delicately.

This song has VERY OLD ROOTS. I think I forgot to tell Matt this, but I play these chords nearly every time I warm up playing guitar. Been the same warm up since 1997 I think. Hit me one day that I never recorded it, and here you have it! Matt did some crazy funky stuff with his guitar. Sounds like explosions (headphones or good stereo needed) at various points. Getting this song mixed was a real bear! Just when we thought things were going well, many of Matt's parts were deleted. He had to re-record the vocals again at the 11th hour. I think he did an awesome job considering just how frustrated he was at that time.
